Los escolopácidos son una familia que pertenece al orden de los Charadriiformes.
Se localizan en las costas, humedales, ríos, salinas, marismas, etc. y se alimentan de principalmente de insectos y otros invertebrados que buscan afanosamente con su pico en el limo, de ahí el nombre de limícolas. Algunas especies también comen pequeños peces, plantas, crustáceos y moluscos.
Hay mucha diferencia de tamaño y la longitud de las patas entre las distintas especies e igualmente existen diferencias entre la forma y la longitud del pico lo que hace que puedan coexistir diversas especies sin ser competidoras entre sí.
La gran mayoría son migradores.
Pertenecen a esta grandísima familia la práctica totalidad de limícolas, como son los correlimos, las agujas, las agachadizas, los combatientes, los zarapitos, la chocha perdiz, los andarríos, los archibebes, los vuelvepiedras y los falaropos.
Existen unas 99 especies en el mundo.
