Los fringílidos son una familia que pertenece al orden de los Passeriformes.
Son pájaros muy abundantes de pequeño tamaño con un pico corto, cónico y fuerte, las patas cortas y la cola con 12 plumas y generalmente dentada.
Son aves gregarias que alimentan de semillas y/o frutas aunque durante la época de cría algunas especies también cazan insectos. Plumajes generalmente más vistosos en los machos, especialmente durante la época de cría.
Componen esta familia los pinzones, los verderones, los verdecillos, los piquituertos, los picogordos, los camachuelos, los luganos, los canarios, los pardillos y los jilgueros. Distribuidos ampliamente por el mundo cuentan con aproximadamente 140 especies.
